Zhikai Sun is a pianist whose artistic career has been shaped by diverse international training and performance experiences. He has appeared widely as both a soloist and a collaborative pianist, performing in concerts and productions that include recitals, chamber music, vocal recitals, and musical theater. Highlights include his Junior Recital in 2023 and performances of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra in California and the Orquestra do Algarve in Portugal. He has also participated in the Piano Concerto Festival in Portugal and the Euro Arts Music Festival in Poland, studying with multiple distinguished pianists.
His recent repertoire includes Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Kapustin. These composers reflect his wide artistic curiosity—from the structural clarity and intellectual depth of Bach and Beethoven to the expressive power of Chopin and Liszt, and the rhythmic vitality of Kapustin’s jazz-inspired style. Through this repertoire, Zhikai explores both the discipline of classical form and the freedom of modern expression, balancing precision with emotional honesty. His favorite repertoire includes varieties of concertos. He enjoys cooperation.
In his earlier years, pianist Zhikai Sun studied with Dr. Mengsheng Shen at the Wuhan Conservatory of Music before attending Idyllwild Arts Academy in California under Dr. Douglas Ashcraft. He is now pursuing his studies at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University with renowned pianist Mr. Boris Slutsky.
